Workplace Needs

I used to really care what people thought of me, so much so that I sometimes did not recognize myself. I spent my twenties trying new jobs, living in different places and going against the societal norms or the traditional way of evolving. The universe had something else in store for me. Fast forward to the present of this self discovery journey, I am now able to identify my values, based on the needs that I require in my life. I would like to thank the non-traditional path I took for this massive growth and evolvement. Finally, knowing my needs and values allows me to express myself more freely; I feel a sense of peace and gratitude daily knowing who I am.

Below is a list of my three needs in priority, according to the Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs that is in conjunction with workplace needs.

1. Belonging and Love – Career Belonging

Working in a positive environment, where I feel that I fit the culture and the values of the organization is very important to me. I need to be surrounded by honest individuals who have a similar take on life, while still bringing different perspectives and backgrounds to the table.

2. Self Actualization – Career Mastery

I would like to feel a sense of purpose in the workplace and know that I am contributing to something bigger than myself. I want to feel sure of myself and have a solid direction. Having established belonging in my career, I believe that mastery is something that is possible!

3. Safety – Career Safety

I have served in restaurants for many of my working years, which has delivered a lack of stability. I constantly worked all hours of the day and night, without a guarantee to take home a certain amount of money. It often created/creates anxiety and worry, as you never know what your take home is at the end of the month.

After completing my first co-op, I had finally felt a sense of balance and peace in my work. I had a consistent schedule and I planned everything around it. I established an amazing routine and I felt very whole and like myself, something I hadn’t felt in years. It was at that moment that I knew I needed stability and consistency in my life!
